How did the Street Food Chef begin?
We are Richard and Abi Golland, founders of The Street Food Chef, we are both passionate about good, healthy, simple food – and wanted to find something to eat that is reasonably priced, delicious and good for you when out and about. Richard has owned a restaurant before and loves cooking and serving great food to customers, but we did not want the weight of a full-on restaurant again. So we started to look into the idea of serving street food. i.e. simple food that is cooked in front of the customers, but we wanted to feel great after eating it! My background is in childcare, and in that environment I always focussed on giving children meals that were freshly cooked, were nutritionally balanced and contained no preservatives or additives. We really believe that you can enjoy your food; it can be delicious, served quickly as well as be healthy and nutritious.
We hit on the idea of Mexican Street Food after Richard’s Dad sent us links and photographs of Taco Trucks and Burrito Bars in Toronto where he lives. After eating a lot of Mexican food and trying it out on our friends and family, we decided to take The Street Food Chef on the road. We were lucky enough to join with Market Place Europe, and went all over England (and Scotland) serving burritos from our little orange trailer. We perfected the menu and the operation whilst we were doing this - we also traded at a lot of local Sheffield events (Peace in the Parks, Cliffhanger, Sheffield Pride etc). The most gruelling of these was the Sheffield Christmas Market; we served freshly prepared burritos and tacos for six weeks from a wooden chalet in temperatures as low as -7° - at times the air inside the fridges was warmer than outside!
We love being a permanent fixture in Sheffield; the little shop on Pinstone Street gives us the opportunity to expand the menu. Our food is simple – all the items are made from scratch, with no additives, and is prepared in front of the customers. Our philosophy is as simple – to make sure that every burrito, taco or empanada served is the best we can make. To do this we use locally sourced, fresh ingredients wherever possible, and we listen to our customers.
So come and try a burrito, and tell us what you think about it,
Richard and Abi
